Life: time shift

I went out taking photos yesterday using a telephoto lens. That sort of distorts reality, I can zoom in on things I wouldn’t normally be able to even see and then record the moment on a digital memory card.  Time shift on a modern television stores images in a similar way.

You can rewind and it’s like time travel to the past and then fast forward to the future. You can even speed up reality on some systems, which is cool if you’re watching motor racing, the cars whizz around the track. You can freeze time too, just stop it and come back to it later.

It would be cool if we could really freeze time, then play the recording and travel to the past or to the future. Time shift is really recording a programme or a movie, then simply moving through that recording to where you want to be. Imagine being able to do that with life. No more rainy days!

We wouldn’t actually be able to travel to the future if the future hadn’t been recorded, just like time shift. It’s interesting to think about time and the effects of time on our lives. I’ve saved a little money to go shopping for clothes, but if I wait and go in the future rather than today; I’ll have even more money and I can buy even more clothes. In finance they call that consolidation. Instead of storing up a digital recording to watch in the future, I would be storing up money to spend in the future. There is always a dilemma, enjoy today or consolidate and enjoy the future more. The future hasn’t happened yet  though and so how can we predict that we will enjoy it more with more money to spend? Can we predict that the future will be better if we prepare for it? We learn and commit to education for a better future, but it’s still a gamble; we can’t know what the future might bring.

We just have to play the odds, if we are careful we are less likely to have an accident. If we are nice to people they are more likely to be nice to us. If we gain knowledge and experience, that will probably be useful in the future. The future, however, is always uncertain…

We base our predictions of the future on our past experiences. Our past experiences also determine our expectations. If we have been successful in life, we expect more success. If we have had a lot of failure, we expect more failure. It is difficult to go forward in life confidently when you are expecting to fail. People who are expecting to be successful can be reckless though and so perhaps a past that is mostly successful, but littered with failures and mistakes is the best one to have. Fortunately, most of us have reasonably successful lives and can get through a day without making a fatal mistake.

Now a question for writers and bloggers. I started writing this 40 minutes ago, with a vague idea about time shift and time travel. I selected a photo and got on with it. Is it thought provoking? Was it worth writing? Sometimes we just have to get on with life; do our best and try not to have regrets…
